Sound and Source
Sound & Source is a customized, watershed-based extension to our successful boat-based Sea Investigators program. Through Sound & Source, Salish works with participating schools to develop additional longer-term inquiry opportunities and field-based science projects, allowing students to connect with their local watershed as they repeat the process of designing and conducting their own field investigations closer to home.
Sound & Source offers:
- Customized curriculum development for watershed research and integration with
current teaching objectives
- Access to sampling equipment and field resources
- Staff consultation and additional classroom visits
- “Mini-grants” to students and teachers to help meet logistical needs
- End-of-year Student Science Symposium where student delegations will present their
research to Sound and Source peers, local scientists, and the community.

Salish Sea Expeditions at National B-WET Conference in Washington, D.C.
In July 2009, Salish staff traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in NOAA's first-ever national Bay-Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) conference. For three days, B-WET grantees from around the country shared presentations and resources for implementing Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEE's) for students, teachers, schools, districts, and communities.
Salish staff had the honor of giving a talk about the Sound and Source program as an example of Pacific Northwest B-WET in action! A highlight for all was meeting Dr. Jane Lubchenco, current Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere & NOAA Administrator. Read an ARTICLE about the conference.
