Nautical and marine educators are hired seasonally to teach in the classroom and aboard the vessel. Our primary hiring period is November for the following spring season (March - June). We accept applications year-round and will keep your resume on file if your desired position is not currently available.

CAPTAIN
CAPTAIN duties include, but are not limited to: directing staff and students in the safe operation of the vessel in a rotating daytime watch system, providing instruction to students, assisting in staff training, maintaining vessel in operational readiness, and fostering the education program and community onboard.

Experience teaching students.  Demonstrated ability to handle and maintain vessel and to safely direct/instruct others to operate the vessel.  First aid/CPR required, Advanced first aid/EMT/WFR, and teaching certificate highly desirable.   Sufficient physical strength and agility to carry out the essential duties of the position, including participating in boat based activities,  lifting and carrying gear up to 50 pounds, as well as an ability to be an effective team member in the risk management strategies of  the organization.

COMPENSATION: $2000-$2400/month based on experience, plus shared room and partial board.

MATE

MATE duties include, but are not limited to: ensuring that all deck operations are carried out in a safe and orderly manner, instructing and overseeing students in proper vessel operation, and presenting nautical science topics both in the classroom and on the vessel.

Experience teaching students.  Demonstrated ability to handle and maintain vessel and to safely direct/instruct others to operate the vessel.  First aid/CPR required.  Advanced first aid/EMT/WFR, teaching certificate highly desirable.  Sufficient physical strength and agility to carry out the essential duties of the position, including participating in boat based activities,  lifting and carrying gear up to 50 pounds, as well as an ability to be an effective team member in the risk management strategies of  the organization.

COMPENSATION: $1500-$1800 per month, depending on experience, plus shared room and partial board.

MARINE EDUCATOR

MARINE EDUCATOR duties include, but are not limited to: working with students in their classroom to design a marine research project, sampling plan, and itinerary.  Aboard the sailing vessel, the Marine Educators supervise students who are deploying equipment, analyzing data, operating the ship, camping, and cooking.  In the evenings, educators may organize free time activities for student participants.  Other duties may include program development, office and logistical projects and general maintenance of equipment.  Marine Educators work with one other educator and several other staff while on board. 
Aquarium Plankton 04 RyanMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  BA/BS in science and/or education with experience in marine science, demonstrated teaching ability and current first aid/CPR/WFR certification preferred.  Experience working with 10-16 year olds, and the ability to work well both independently and as a team member.  Teaching certificate, advanced first aid, and boating skills are desirable.  Sufficient physical strength and agility to carry out the essential duties of the position, including participating in boat based activities,  lifting and carrying gear up to 50 pounds, as well as an ability to be an effective team member in the risk management strategies of  the organization.

COMPENSATION: $1400-$1600/month, depending on experience, plus shared room and partial board.

DECKHAND

DECKHAND duties include, but are not limited to: ensuring that all deck operations are carried out in a safe and orderly manner, instructing and overseeing students in proper vessel operation, and presenting nautical science topics both in the classroom and on the vessel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Experience teaching students.  Demonstrated ability to safely direct/instruct others to operate the sailing vessel. First aid/CPR/WFR required.  Advanced sailing and safety training highly desirable.  Sufficient physical strength and agility to carry out the essential duties of the position, including participating in boat based activities,  lifting and carrying gear up to 50 pounds, as well as an ability to be an effective team member in the risk management strategies of  the organization.

COMPENSATION: $1400-$1600 per month, depending on experience, plus shared room and partial board.

LOGISTICS COORDINATOR

The Logistics Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating pre-trip and day-to-day food and supply details for 2-5 day science education programs aboard a 61’ sailboat. This position will be split approximately half-time onshore and half-time onboard. Onshore, the Logistics Coordinator will assist students in planning menus, shop for, sort, and pack food prior to the trips, in addition to other office preparation tasks as needed. Aboard ship, the Logistics Coordinator will oversee 5th-12th grade students preparing meals in the galley and assist marine educators and sailing crew where needed. The Logistics Coordinator works as one member of a 5-7 person team.

Mac and Cheese QueenMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Exceptional organizational skills are needed, as well as the ability to work well individually and as a team member.  Time management and responsibility a must. Experience working with 10-16 year olds in a residential setting, experience in food service, and boating experience are helpful but not required. Demonstrated interest in Salish Sea Expeditions programs and mission. Basic First Aid/CPR required; Advanced, WFR or EMT preferred.

COMPENSATION: $1400/mo. Plus shared room & partial board and sea time.
